The International Snowboard
Federation was founded in 1989 in Vancouver by 120 riders form 5
nations. The ISF philosophy was: "race hard, maybe earn a few bucks,
then party afterward". The goal was to be a free-spirited,
rider-orientated association that lead snowboarding to become an Olympic
sport. One of the riders was three fold world champion Terje Håkonsen,
who is honored by Casio with several G-Shock models.
In 1998 Snowboarding
became an Olympic sport at the Winter Games in Japan. The I.O.C. pointed
the rival organization FIS as the organizing party. According to the ISF
this was a "burocratic stuffy organization". When top riders, like Terje Håkonsen
and sponsors were pulling back, the ISF stopped
activities in 2002. It was the end of an "not just a sports federation,
but a lifestyle/peace movement and philosophy".* |
